Shining A Spotlight on: Rachel Robertson -MUA

Meet MUA Of The Year 2019 – Rachel

Where do you work and what do you do?

Hi I’m Rachel Robertson of RR MakeUp. I am a make up artist offering bridal and occasion make up. Currently not back to work yet due to covid but hopefully soon. I will be based at a gorgeous new salon in cove, Carnie & Poole.

What is your most popular treatment?

My most requested make up is a smokey eye with lashes. A glamorous and gorgeous look for any night out. Teamed with a nude or red lip it’s a look that suits everyone. I love when a client comes in with a photo on their phone especially when it’s from my own social media.

What is your favourite treatment to perform?

I love doing all make up, but colour is my favourite! I love coming up with new colour combos or taking inspiration from my favourite artists.

I do love Bridal make up too. It is something I never thought I could see myself doing but I absolutely love it. I really love being a part of a brides special morning.

What is your favourite beauty treatment to receive?

I love love love getting my hair done. Always have! I go to Jemma Poole at Carnie & Poole in Aberdeen and usually just sit down and let her do her magic. I trust her 100%.

What are your tips for healthy skin?

I adore Caroline Hirons! I love how she speaks her mind and I can totally relate to her in so many ways. I was introduced to her by my friend Tasha Moorhouse when we worked in Boots and I’ve never looked back.

Get a good morning and evening routine. It’s so worth it! If you are too tired before you go to bed, do your evening routine earlier in the evening.

Double cleanse in evenings

Use an eye cream

Use Retinol (vitamin A) on older skin 😬

Vitamin C is great for skin

Use a good Moisturizer

Drink water

Always wear SPF

and  ALWAYS take your make up off and don’t use wipes. They are not good for your skin or the environment.

What are your business plans for 2020?

Unfortunately due to covid all my big business plans are on hold. I am currently re-training to offer brows again and hope to do this soon. For anyone who knows me, they’ll know I’ve trained in most beauty things but make up is my passion.

What’s your favourite make up brand?

There are so many good brands out there and I like to mix products! Here a few recommendations that I love:

Foundation – Lancôme & YSL are my number ones. I repurchase these constantly and always recommend them.

I also adore Boots N0.7 hydraluminous and recommend this for a lighter coverage day wear foundation.

Brows – I love brows so much. I always use, Browjam, Benefit and Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Eyeshadow – Stacey Marie & BePerfect. They are all amazing!

Lashes – Primalash & Yazmae Cosmetics are my faves.

Concealer – MAC Pro Long Wear and Maybelline Eraser Eye mixed. It’s the best!

Bronzers & blushes – I love MAC and Hourglass. Both beautiful.

Lipstick – MAC, Charlotte Tilbury, KIKO (still sad it closed in Aberdeen) and Clinique.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of starting their own business?

Do it! It’s so worth all the hard work. Get to know others in your industry, support each other, there’s room for everyone and it shouldn’t be a competition. I always recommend other make up artists if I’m not available and I’ll always recommend anyone who I know is good at what they do, and are reliable and honest.

Do you have a party trick?

I can still do the splits! Usually after a few drinks and encouragement from my pals, I’m showing off.  There’s lots of photo evidence going around!
